Swap half the water for coconut water if you like, and maple syrup stands in for honey. Lemon, lime and orange all work. A level teaspoon of salt holds about 2,000 mg of sodium, so an eighth of one gives roughly 250 mg.

Matcha energy drink, step by step

Matcha disperses in cold water if you shake it hard in a small volume first. Shaking a full bottle from the start is what leaves clumps floating on top.
- Tip the 2 g of matcha into your bottle with a small splash of the cold water. Seal it and shake hard until no dry powder clings to the sides.
- Add the honey and the salt while the volume is still small. Both dissolve far more readily in a splash than in a full bottle.
- Shake again briefly, then top up with cold water to 500 ml.
- Drop in the citrus slices, seal, and give it one last shake.
- Chill it, or pour it over ice and drink it cold.
Matcha is a suspension rather than a solution, so some of it settles. Shake before each mouthful and it stays even to the last sip.
Do you actually need electrolytes, or is matcha and water enough?
For most sessions, matcha and water is genuinely enough. Water alone covers exercise under about 90 minutes, though that threshold comes from a 1999 review we only have in abstract, so read it as a rule of thumb rather than settled consensus. Past roughly 90 minutes, a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink starts to earn its place, though that guidance also rests on the 1999 abstract-only review and is a rule of thumb rather than settled consensus. Hydration advice has also moved toward individual sweat rates since.
So for a 45-minute gym session or a park run, the salt is optional. The drink still works on flavour and caffeine alone.

How much sodium and potassium should it actually have?
On the longer, hotter, sweatier sessions where the drink does earn its salt, here is what the guidance specifies.
Sodium is the one with a number attached. Sports-nutrition guidance puts it at about 500 to 700 mg per litre of finished drink for endurance sessions. Scaling that to a 500 ml bottle gives roughly 250 to 350 mg. We ran that calculation ourselves, because no source states a per-500-ml figure directly. A level teaspoon of salt carries about 2,000 mg of sodium, so an eighth of a teaspoon gives roughly 250 mg. That sits right at the bottom of the band. The Australian Institute of Sport sets the range to balance thirst against drinkability. So read it as a practical band, not a physiological optimum.
Potassium is the interesting one, because there is no number to give you. No authority we consulted sets a potassium level for a drink, and that absence does not mean potassium is unimportant, only that nobody quantifies it for beverages. So ours arrives with the ingredients instead. USDA data puts coconut water at 250 mg of potassium per 100 g, and swapping half the water brings some along.

What is each ingredient actually doing?

Salt replaces what sweat takes out. Sweat carries electrolytes out of you, mainly sodium along with potassium. Putting them back supports fluid balance on long or hot sessions.
Honey is the carbohydrate. Sports-drink guidance puts carbohydrate at 4 to 8% of the drink by weight. That band suits gastric tolerance as much as fuel. We measure ours by the spoon, so treat the tablespoon as a taste starting point.
Coconut water, if you use it, brings potassium naturally at about 250 mg per 100 g.
Citrus cuts matcha's grassiness when the drink is cold. Nearly every homemade version agrees on it.
Matcha brings the caffeine, and that is the next question.
How much caffeine is in it, compared with a can?

It depends entirely on the can. Against a small one the two sit closer than most people assume. Against a large one, matcha is well behind. So the flat claim that matcha has less caffeine than an energy drink does not survive the numbers.

Australian energy drinks may contain no more than 320 mg of caffeine per litre under the Food Standards Code. That is a ceiling rather than a typical value, which is why every energy-drink row says "up to". Our matcha caffeine page keeps the full comparison set.
Matcha also carries L-theanine, though whether the pair beats caffeine alone is still an open question. The one trial we found ran nine people on isolated compounds in water, not matcha, and its combination arm did not beat theanine on its own. When should you drink it before a run, gym session or padel match?
About an hour out, which is where the caffeine research points too. Caffeine reliably improves exercise performance at 3 to 6 mg per kg of body mass. Most people take it around 60 minutes before exercise. But a standard matcha serve sits well under that band for most adults. So this is a drink you enjoy before a session, not a pre-workout in the supplement sense.
Fluid timing has its own guidance. Pre-exercise advice commonly runs to 5 to 7 ml per kg of body weight about four hours out. However, a 2018 review restates that figure secondhand rather than the position stand stating it. An older guideline puts it at 400 to 600 ml roughly two hours before you start. These are two rules of thumb from different eras, so pick one.
Once you are moving, a common guideline is 150 to 300 ml every 15 to 20 minutes. Still, the right volume depends on how much you sweat.
Can you make it with green tea instead of matcha powder?
You can, and it will taste good, but it is a different drink. A cup of steeped green tea carries roughly 30 to 40 mg of caffeine. Meanwhile 2 g of matcha carries about 57 to 64 mg. The gap opens because you whisk and drink the whole powdered leaf instead of steeping it and throwing it away.

Can you batch it and chill it, and how long does it keep?
Batching suits the cold-shake method, because nothing has to cool down first. Scale the ingredients and shake the matcha into a small volume of water as usual. Then dilute up and refrigerate in a sealed bottle.
Australian food-safety guidance keeps perishable foods at or below 5 °C for 2 to 3 days. Treat a bottle you made at home the same way. If it has sat out of the fridge for under 2 hours, it can go back in. Beyond four hours, throw it out rather than re-chilling it.
Add citrus slices on the day rather than to the batch. They soften after a night in the fridge.
Can you just add matcha to the energy or sports drink you already buy?
Yes, and it works better than it sounds, provided you do the caffeine arithmetic first. Stir the matcha into a splash of cold water before combining, or it will sit on top in clumps.
The arithmetic matters because you are stacking two caffeine sources. A 250 ml Australian energy drink can legally hold up to about 80 mg of caffeine. A 2 g scoop of matcha adds roughly 57 to 64 mg on top of that. Regulators put about 400 mg a day as safe for most healthy adults. In pregnancy the figure is about 200 mg a day. A sports drink is usually the easier partner, because the electrolytes are already dosed. Check the label first, though, since some sports and hydration drinks do add caffeine. What matcha adds is flavour and catechins. Independent lab testing of commercial matcha powders found roughly 37 to 70 mg of EGCG per gram of powder. Scaled up to a 2 g serve, that works out to somewhere around 73 to 140 mg. The span is wide because we derived it across brands rather than measuring yours. Matcha brings no sweetness of its own.
Three ways to change it up
Coconut water version. Swap half the water for coconut water, which carries about 250 mg of potassium per 100 g. It takes the drink somewhere softer and rounder.
Fruit and mint. Muddle a few berries or a sprig of mint in with the citrus. Our matcha smoothie recipes go further in that direction.
